Educational objectives

• To understand that light cannot pass through some materials and that this leads to the formation of shadows.

• To discuss the concept of shadows being formed from blocked light.
• To understand that when shadows are formed outside the sun is the light source.
• To create a shadow puppet monster biography.
• To build a shadow puppet.
• To recognise that shadows can change size when moved but not their basic structural shape i.e. a circular object can never make a rectangular shadow.
• To understand that a shadow is an outline of an object so colouring the object (the card in this example) will not change the shadow colour or shape.
